Anesthesiology

Anesthesiologists minimize a patient's pain before, during and after medical procedures, as well as monitor the patient's vital signs. They are required to complete earn a Doctor of Medicine degree and then complete a 6-year anesthesiology residency program.

Anesthesiologist Career Profile Anesthesiologists manage patient pain before, during and after medical procedures. They also monitor and control a patient's vital signs, allowing surgeons and other physicians to safely perform life-saving surgeries and other procedures. They administer numbing agents, gasses to render patients unconscious during surgery and post-operative pain relief medication.

During surgery, an anesthesiologist monitors the patient's heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and other vitals. When surgery is complete, the anesthesiologist oversees the patient's recovery and manages pain as the patient awakens from general anesthesia.

Education Requirements

Education Requirements for Anesthesiologists After completing medical studies, aspiring anesthesiologists must earn a Doctor of Medicine degree in Austria, followed by at least six years of training in an anesthesiology residency program and internship.

As part of their studies, medical students will study critical care medicine, cardiology, internal medicine, surgery and pharmacology. Like all physicians, anesthesiologists must be board certified prior to entering medical practice.
